pad-to-first-surface failed from a sketch touching target surface

Post by jiandingzhe »

As shown in screenshot, the pad from Sketch003 to object surface does not take effect. However, if I add a positive Z offset for Sketch003 (such as 0.05mm), the pad would take effect.

It seems I cannot pad-to-surface from a sketch "touching" that surface, but what should I do if I really need that shape?

The project is also attached within this forum thread.

In this example,
* you should not sketch upon face :TNP
* you can pad "one dimension" from 6 mm up to 34 mm (as you have a whole piece with no void inside).
* you can pad "to last".

When a tool does't want to work, you need to find an other solution : other tool, other order of construction, ...

I would guess that your design can accept an offset of 0.000001 mm. That will work.

I tried to sketch on global plane+offset, it still not pad to that surface.
I cannot pad to last, in my real model (too large to upload to forum) the main part is a thin shell and pad-to-last would penetrate inside.

Yes, though it is ugly, it really works. Thanks for a lot!

So how would you design "pad to first surface" when the sketch is already at the first surface?

In this case it may seem pretty obvious, but I will bet there are cases where ignoring the "already satisfied" condition would be a mistake.
