Maybe so but unfortunately, I get freezes using the ruler if I don't use it:

I think I found another solution.

Instead of unchecking "Redirect internal Python output to report view"

I checked "Use software OpenGL" in the Display settings and that too prevented the freezing.

UPDATE!

Turns out that this does not prevent freezing. On certain simulations, ones where the iterations are fast and messages in the log display are very frequent, I still get freezes. Where the simulation has a lot more cells and the iteration loop is much slower and messages come across much slower, there are no freezes. So it definitely has something to do with the log window update rate.
