Thanks everyone for your submissions so far! We have about a week left in the contest: the submission window closes at midnight UTC at the end of the day on Wednesday, May 31. After that it will take me a day or two to compile the valid submissions and set up a voting topic, which will then run for one week. A couple of notes:

First, please do not include any proprietary items that you don't have the IP rights to in your model -- even if you made the model, we don't want a C&D from the company that made the product because we implied it was designed in FreeCAD. Trademark law is a tricky subject and we'd do well to avoid it entirely.

Second, only full submissions will be considered, so if folks want a 0.19-style multi-model display, someone is going to have to actually create a submission that compiles the "tiles" into a single entry. That someone is not me :D .

Third, to be considered a "full submission" you have to include both required sizes, without the text "FreeCAD" or "0.21" -- you may, however, include a third image that is a mockup of what it will look like with the actual text in place. That mockup will be what is presented for voting. If you don't have a mockup, I'll insert the text for you for voting purposes. If you only include the larger size I will down-rez for you, but submissions with only the small size won't be considered.

Potentially controversial opinion:

I don't think FreeCAD should be represented by rebuilds of existing designs. I think it sends the wrong message; that FreeCAD is "just" a hobbyists tool to recreate what others have designed, rather than being used for original design work itself.
Edit: I guess that is somewhat covered by the proprietary exclusion, my mistake.

Here is my try at it

800x490 res

And a mockup

Note that there is transparency and a background for the image. That should help with light and dark desktop backgrounds. It can be seen better in the mockup.
Hope you like it.

That's quite nice design! May I suggest changing the LCD number to 021, as this is gonna be FreeCAD v0.21?

Note that it will also be the splashscreen for the 0.22 development version going forward.

Here is my try at a splash screen that attempts to show that FreeCAD is a full-blown CAD package for designers, engineers and also hobbyists. This is my version of a 3D printable rotor for an Enigma machine. It is a complete redesign that makes use of today's manufacturing capabilities, including printed circuit boards, pogo-pins, and of course additive manufacturing to create an Enigma rotor that has the look and feel of the originals. It combines design elements from various rotor versions that were produced and yet it can be made today without complicated machinery.

By the way the blueprint is an image in the FreeCAD file and was made from a pdf export of a TechDraw page from and exploded assembly made with A2Plus. The BOM also came from A2Plus... Yep you really can do it all with FreeCAD.

So what about using a render from the render workbench.
Everything is made in Freecad, only the cycles standalone render engine is used.
