I recently started my own welding business and since AutoCAD has a bit of a price tag on it I decided to look for alternatives. I always liked open source software; I already use other open source programs for my business so I decided to try FreeCAD. It's a little tricky compared to the big brand name programs but seems like it should be able to do everything that I would ever need to do and much more.
I like drawing my creations out on CAD just to be able to save them for future reference and print nice blueprints whenever needed. I got tired of the horrible drawings I would get at my old shop done on ripped up boxes and pieces of plywood. On top of that, when clients ask me to build something, sending them 3D renderings of what I plan on making makes me seem cool
Anyway, I tried to draw the frame for one of the products I plan on selling, a bait chopper. The frame would be made of 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 3/16" Aluminum angle. Anyway Here's some screenshots of what I came up with after a bit of messing around. It's still a wireframe but I'll figure out how to make it solid soon enough.
