Chewed out section... can you help?

Post by johnstonf »

Code: Select all

OS: macOS 10.16
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.20.2.29603 (Git)
Build type: Release
Branch: (HEAD detached at 0.20.2)
Hash: 930dd9a76203a3260b1e6256c70c1c3cad8c5cb8
Python 3.10.8, Qt 5.15.4, Coin 4.0.0, Vtk 9.1.0, OCC 7.6.3
Locale: C/Default (C)

I have a test model, and it has two sections, and the taller section has a pocket to create a track for a thin lid to slide in on. It works and prints, but has this notch chewed out near where the pocket exits from the outer wall.

I've attached my doc and some photos (hard to describe).

Just curious how i can fix it, what i did wrong.

That doesn't look like a modeling but rather like a printing issue. With an FDM printer you cannot print such faces in the void. Your slicer may have added automatically some support structure which has to be removed.

As the third image I attached, 3rd photo, it is clearly in the modeling. That's a photo of a screen right from freecad...

My slicer would put a support in there if it can't handle it.

In fact, there is about a 1mm slice that it DID print over the slit.
I attached another angle photo... hope it shows better...

That's exactly what I see in your model:

EXACTLY,

I don't want that hollowed out piece, just the slit, and filled in up flush to the top level.

I can't figure out where that is coming from (Yup, newby question, I'm sure LoL.)

Thanks!

@Shalmeneser told you the problem. You have a superfluous pocket operation that you managed to make hidden. Here I unhid it (right click menu) and zeroed the pocket Length2, so it does nothing.

Congrats to the fast find, never saw a hidden (except defaults) object in FreeCAD ever. How did you found that so fast? You Did you always search hidden objects? I mean, i see it in the dependency graph, but never came to the idea to search hidden objects.
