[Contest] FPA Logo - Submit Designs Here

Post by chennes »

FPA Logo Design Challenge

The FreeCAD Project Association (FPA)'s Mission is to support and protect the FreeCAD project. As an organization independent of the community FreeCAD project, the FPA would like to have a logo that is visually distinct. See earlier discussion here.

The logo consists of some or all of the following parts:

In the requirements below, the keywords "MUST" and "MAY" are to be interpreted as described in RFC 2119.

Logo Requirements

1. The logo MUST be an original design.
2. The logotype MUST read "FreeCAD Project Association".
3. The logo MAY include a tagline that is consistent with the FPA mission.
4. The logo MAY use a similar color palette to the current FreeCAD logo (Red / Blue).
5. The icon MAY include elements from the current FreeCAD logo (Capital F and cog).
6. The icon MAY incorporate the letters FPA.
6. The icon, when used alone, MUST reproduce well at a relatively small scale (24 pixels square).
8. Submissions MAY include multiple forms, e.g. icon only, icon and logotype (right), icon with logotype (below), logotype only.
9. The logo MUST be recognizable and clear in a fully desaturated color state to allow printing in black and white.
10. The logo MUST not use color combinations known to adversely affect color-vision-impaired people.
11. Submissions MUST be made under the assumption that they are being released under either a Creative Commons license or LGPL (whichever is more appropriate).
12. Submission MUST identify any font used in the design. For an example see the current FreeCAD logo specification.

Challenge Rules

1. Designers may make any number of submissions. Each submission should be in its own post-response to this thread. Do not make a submission by replying to or quoting an earlier submission.
2. Submissions must be received by 20 March 2023. The submission window will close early if more than 50 submissions are received.
3. After the submission window is closed, a poll will be created, and the FPA members will select 3-5 finalists.
4. The final selection will be done as a Forum poll of the finalists.
5. In order to vote in the poll, community members must have an account that is at least 3 months old or at least 25 forum posts in their profile post count.
6. Final voting will run for a period of at least 14 days.
7. The winning submission will serve as the FPA logo for a period of at least two years. An acknowledgment credit for the design will be noted on the FPA website/repo.

Prizes

1. Designers of logos selected for the final voting round will each receive a FreeCAD T-Shirt.
2. The designer of the final winning logo will be paid an honorarium of $100 USD for their work.

Assume 4 put up for final voting, could the one getting 28% of votes (against the others getting each 24%) be called a winner? I would say that the logo that at least receives a >50% majority vote is a winner.

We'll see how it goes. We'd have to implement runoffs etc. manually, it's not something our poll system supports directly.

Nice setup, really like it goes a bit deeper than just a logo.

Finding lettertypes is a bit annoying these days, since there are a lot of websites that let you download illegal versions and there are also lot of sites that sell lettertypes that they don't own. Which results into the issue that it's almost impossible to know who the real author is and what copyrights the type has.
There are some exceptions, mostly fonts branded as "Openfont".

I am not into glitter, mottos or logos. Just said:

Open Source parametric 3D CAD modeler

FreeCAD is named FreeCAD, but it is more then a CAD modeler, it is a CAX or CAE program, since it have CAM (Path) FEM, BIM, and so on. At least modeler alone is in the state as now not correct.

phpBB [video]

Here my proposal. Many open source organisations have amateur and funny logos. They establish a style by themselves, different of corporate companies. I like that. So I create a funny Icon with a double meaning: an acronym and a creature made of different parts (like FreeCAD).

The colors are from FreeCAD palette. The font for the text is "Existence" with some interventions. https://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/Existence-Light

Here's my entry (and of course to make sure there is no impropriety I declare myself ineligible for the prizes :) )

I was trying to make something that looked like scaffolding (e.g. "support")... dunno how well that reads...
