Precisely Position Sub Shape Binder

Post by maurosmartins »

Dear all,

I've downloaded the 3D model of a display and I would like to make a centered hole on a case to mount it.

I can measure the display and make Pocket, but I would like to use the display model instead. For that I've made a sub shape binder on the Box model:

Here is where I found issues, how can I move the Binder to a precise location? Can a sketch on the box face be used to place a point on the Binder?

My final goal is to have the display centered on the box face, is this the correct workflow? are there alternatives?

Looking forward your ideas,
Best regards, Mauro.

If you are importing a file and trying to get a Shapebinder to attach to the right face, you might check this:

LCS doesn't line up with part I select

I was running into the problem like this and changing the Trace Support value fixed the problem for me.

Hello all,

currently there are two files:
- First I've downloaded the step file of display from Waveshare Wiki imported it and saved in freecad file.
- Second is a simple box (see attached) and also the shape binder with the surface I would like to pocket on the box face.

Code: Select all

OS: Windows 10 Version 2009
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.20.2.29177 +426 (Git)
To clarify I'm looking for a way to move the shape binder precisely to the center of the box face so I can afterwards make the respective hole.

looking forward your reply,
Best regards, Mauro.

Your sketch is upon a Plane.
Move the rectangle to be centered (Sketcher_ConstrainSymmetric) and you can use the Origin to set something later.

the yellow part is not a sketch, it is a sub shape binder containing the geometry of the back of the display.

here is the display:

in this case the display geometry that needs to be pocketed into the box is very simple (just a rectangle) and I can make a sketch of it quite easily but I'm thinking in a more complex shape using the sub shape binder would be useful but returning to my original question, is there a way to precisely move the sub shape binder to a point? for example a datum point or something similar?

Best regards, Mauro.

Instead of moving the shapebinder it's easier to move the sketch...... Like Shalm say's.

It's almost always best to centre your sketches.

Ahhh, I get it now! you and Shalmeneser mean, don't move the shape binder, instead, move sketch that produces the box.
It is not exactly the solution I was looking but it servers my purposes.

Thank you all for taking the time to help!

Best regards, Mauro.

Either you move the chair, either the piano.
