Best export format for viewing FreeCAD models in a webpage ?

Post by Boo »

Hi,

I have made a few models using FreeCAD and now that am getting a bit more proficient at using it I am finding it to be a great tool for my aeromodelling and other hobbies.

I am keen to share some of the stuff I've done and spread the news about FreeCAD. I have a github account and can share models with this easily enough but it would be really useful if there was a way to share 3D models in such a way that they can be viewed via web browsers. I initially thought SVG would be a great option but have since discovered it is 2D only so wondered whether peopl here know of a format that is intrinsically 3D but which can be displayed in a web page by browsers without needing a plugin ? Ideally, a format already supported by FreeCAD :D

Is there such a thing ? If so then is it expected to be available in FreeCAD anytime soon ?

Thanks,

Boo

it all depends on the type of sharing you want: if it's just to show HTML > ok
if it"s to share a 3D printable object then it"s STL
otherwise you still have a Techdraw view with quotation and PDF export

True, and GitHub for example will also show STL files... https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD-libr ... folder.stl

There are some interesting FreeCAD models with 3d viewer on GrabCad, even assemblies. How the assemblies are uploaded is beyond my knowledge.
* I'm aware that not everyone is a fan of GrabCad
