Re: From FreeCAD To The Real World

Post by haegar »

Dear Keith and Thomas,
here is the test file:
I have taken the FREEship default hull, saved it as IGES (new model). Loaded into FC gave a blank screen.
Loaded into TCAD2018 and saved as IGES again (TCAD Test)
FC could read it as a compound of 4 surfaces. By exploding the compound and upgrading the 4 surfaces into a shell (DRAFT WB), I got at least the screeenshot picture. But here ends the story. I failed in making a solid out of it, because I could add the missing faces but I could not make a shell of it.
Of course, I can make a full hull in FREEship, but reformatting the file with a third party software and clicking then on every single surface segment is a bit impractical. The real hull is a bit more complex ...

One remark to FREEship and the "real world example": Although I use DELFTship sometimes for designing a hull, I have NOT the pro version. For getting an IGES file I have to downgrade the hull to FREEship 2.6, but this is usually no problem

I note that Gmsh like FreeCAD uses OpenCascade to import IGES files, like FreeCAD, Gmsh just displays a blank screen.

I see FreeShip does not run on a Mac which is what I have, wondering if there are options in FreeShip related to IGES export.

no options, just simply export as IGS ...

... parts of the above "IGES-ship thread" should be moved to Help => no more show.
(I'm also getting files delivering a blank screen)
Generating an IGES file out of FreeCAD_0.20.1 under Win 10
looking for file header and format differences ???

Antenna-mast in Switzerland. Bolted at a concrete wall.
Steel construction with FC, Techdraw, and of course, some FEM-stuff.

Magnificent!

I see some optimizations could be made by replacing the flat rectangle + triangle part with a section of another I-beam but I suppose for just one part it doesn't matter that much. Looking at the oval holes required in your model, if they are subcontracting this with one of those mighty Deutsch tube&profile lasers then cutting it from the same stock as the horizontal I-beam would be more efficient as there is less welding involved.

Thanks for having a look at the model.
Some hints:
I had only 3 old building plans (scanned, pdf), which I scaled and stitched together in FC.
Can I rely on this alone? For instance, the roof overhang (?) was not clear, so I needed
another pair of longholes. The longholes and the clamps (2) are needed vor vertikal adjustment
of the mast. Part (1) can be done as you suggested, but I could use this part from another project :)
Greetings Thomas

3D Printer loosely based on the Hypecube Evolution but in the end almost completely designed in FreeCAD. Actually this was my first real FreeCAD project. I really like the performance of Asembly4 and the ability to link objects (incl. Spreadsheets) between files the design very parametric.
