Importing IGES to FreeCAD from Free!Ship

Post by digitalis99 »

I'm a CAD newbie trying to get surfaces to import to FreeCAD from a design I've done in Free!Ship. About the only non-mesh option for exporting from Free!Ship is IGES, so that's what I'm importing into the Windows build of FreeCAD 0.11.4474. The import says it's successful, but nothing is displayed on-screen. Imports of STL's or OBJ's between the two programs work as expected, but I don't like triangles. ;)

I can supply a sample IGES export from Free!Ship if it would help.

Hi digitalis,

Yes, if you supply a sample, we can try it out. Maybe you could also upgrade your FreeCAD version to the "unstable" 0.12 version, if I'm not mistaken there's been some code to improve IGES import. And in my opinion, it's not that much more unstable than the 0.11 release, with a bunch more features as a bonus.

If you create a SourceForge account (which may soon be mandatory, because of the spam problem), you'll be able to attach files. Only zip and jpeg are allowed, and they must not exceed 256KB.

Thanks normandc,

I installed the latest .12 build and tried my import again. The geometry imported successfully and displayed points and lines! The model looks pretty close to what was in Free!Ship, but I'm still examining the details. Thanks for the advice.
