Ulis spreadsheet based loaf tin

Post by Ulicad »

Thanks to the many helpers from the forum who made a CAD representation of the loaf tin possible in the first place!

Each and every one of them is listed in the credits.

Hi everyone,
a loaf tin made by a layman is presented in its actual, transitional state - as is.
The history at the end of the post below is reflecting changes and releases.

The presented model is functionally mature and ready for practical use.
Very little effort and only limited experience in FreeCAD is needed for the creation of an individual loaf tin having exactly the capacity and dimensions required.

Two basic steps are neccessary to get a loaf tin like this:
  • Entering the pan measures and exporting
  • Passing the 3D-model to a workshop
Jeno created and contributed this image,
all important aspects are nicely visible.

Full information about the loaf pan in its physical aspects is provided on these pages:
  • In english language (planned for spring 2024)

A collection of precreated sizes may be found here:

For each size in the table, models also are offered for download (STEP exports) :

  • Attached FreeCAD documents are NOT considered examples for preferred practices. Nor are they examples for nice UI-principles, mathematical or programmatic beauty. They are to be taken 'as is' until further notice.
What the FreeCAD document is:
  • It is one fairly simple sample for some features of what and how it can be done using FC. Given some effort only, it is not very difficult to follow its methods and paths for a user new to FC.

Thank you for taking the time to document your project. Can you tell us how much you'd have to pay for something like that at your local workshop?

Hi Max,
thank you, this exactly is hitting the main real world point to be looked into!

Regarding 'local':
I did not try to get prices locally since the handling costs (as a main cost factor!) presumably would be rather unfavourable compared to what may be called 'online' companies.
There was no time yet to clarify this generally. Like in so many other cases, 'the devil is in the detail'.

Two issues are to be considered:
  • the maximal depth of the pan which can be manufactured using the existing equipment
  • the granted precision in bending (bending radius, shortening factor)
Since the first prototype by design did not require a particular precision, it was manufactured by a german company (mainly online offers) for about EUR 45,-. For this prototype there were no particular price considerations.

The second prototype needed to satisfy both of the two issues from above and therefore was manufactured by a company supplying automotive parts as their main business. Under the label 'sample', I managed to get a price of EUR 80,- instead of EUR 160,- for a single piece in 2022.

There certanly is something more suiting to be found for this case and I am on it actually.

Best regards
Uli

Hi,
improvements to the Insertion part sketch now made sketch 'flipping' unlikely. In the same go, the precision of the design-width of the insertion part could be slightly corrected (This correction is more of theoretical value. It had no noticeable practical consequences).

Furthermore, the long lacking cleaning and improvement of the spreadsheets User and Developer could be started also ;)
I am happy that version 0.21.1 was making this task very easy. Many thanks to the devs for that!

Substantial improvements are planned for 2024, the target being a nice, agreeable and simple learning example for the benefit of less experienced users. Following this, I'd be happy to remove the warning in the OP!

Main areas are:
  • The technical structure of the FC-model
  • The spreadsheets (last priority)
For a sound improvement of the structure of the FC-model, possibly a dedicated Topic could be helpful?

The state of the model in its actual version is rather terrible in my eyes as well, no doubt.. As an only occasional FC-user I am very open to implement improvements along suggestions of the commmunity!

Edit:
Attached latest version loafpan...418...FCStd
