Re: Problem converting STL to Freecad solid
I have no particular issues with Debian, Manjaro, and Ubuntu.thomas-neemann wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 3:18 pmin my opinion, a program runs best with the operating system on which it was programmed. probably most freecad programmers use xubuntu
Admittedly, I'm not a "freecad programmer", But, I do compile it on all three platforms almost daily.
The concept of "runs best" seems nebulous, how would you quantify it without defined criteria, benchmarks, and tests with identical hardware? You'd need to determine that all operating systems had comparable drivers, etc.
And, when the tests were done, users would still not get the same experience, unless they duplicated the hardware and OS from the tests.

Re: Problem converting STL to Freecad solid
i started freecad with linux mint mate. i had some problems. xubuntu was recommended to me. I tested it and the problems were gone.
Re: Problem converting STL to Freecad solid
My objection is completely related to you telling someone to change OS to fix a problem when using FreeCAD.thomas-neemann wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 4:44 pm i started freecad with linux mint mate. i had some problems. xubuntu was recommended to me. I tested it and the problems were gone.
That is simply bad advice and very misleading.
(Mint was the hot ticket at one time. Not so much any more. )

That doesn't mean that any number of other Linux OS's might have done the same.thomas-neemann wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 4:44 pm

I think you'll also find plenty of folks running FC on Mint now.

I'm not sure about that, where did you get that information?

Not necessary. I had thought there was an overview somewhere.thomas-neemann wrote: ↑Sun Jun 04, 2023 7:00 pm If I find any more information in the future, I'll post it here

Re: Problem converting STL to Freecad solid
I would find such official information, which operating system which programmer uses, very good.
btw: sliptonic seems also to use something like that

Re: Problem converting STL to Freecad solid
Not necessarily, that is likely a snap release.
Still, this is no argument to say "freecad runs better on xubuntu", each system has it's own set of problem something might work better on linux than on windows while something else is worse. I don't think we can objectively say any specific system is better and specially not a distro and even less so a specific spin of that distro. The correct way of expressing this would be "FreeCAD has worked great in Xubuntu LTS on my pc, consider trying it"
I agree, specially when it is expressed so bluntly without the required nuance.
