I would like to create a beam based frame with lap joints (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lap_joint), i.e. half and cross joints.
After playing (fighting?) with panels/boxes and various cuts I'm starting to think, that my current approach is wrong.
In particual it seems to be quite difficult to align the parts properly, so the cuts really line up.
Please find attached a little excerpt, which is part of a leg of a workbench planned.
What would be the right/better way to do this?
Many thanks

Re: Woodworking: How to best create lap joints
I'll just refer you to this,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hejDh5YXGbU
the WW wb developer @dprojects has a lot of videos up -- no audio but if you slow them down you can mostly follow what's happening.
There also is a mega WW thread here viewtopic.php?t=8247
Having worked with the WW wb for a few days, my experience is that it takes a few tries to sort of get the workflow -- but it does work pretty well.
For alignment issues, I recommend always working from the origin and use the magicMove tool to fine tune alignment.

What does that word mean in FreeCAD? Look in the Glossary.

You could also try the marksters Joint macro available in addons.

Re: Woodworking: How to best create lap joints
the choice of axes is important,
I will make cleats in 2 * 1/2 thickness: one for the tenons, one for the mortises
then symmetries
and you can also tilt the whole thing at the end (in gold)

Many thanks, in particular for providing the example which is valuable for discovering the path of creation!papyblaise wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2023 10:54 am the choice of axes is important,
