FreeCAD on Discord

Post by obelisk79 »

I use Discord for connecting with like minded people from all kinds of hobby communities.

FreeCAD never has had a dedicated server on Discord (the closest thing was the 'Elmer' Discord server).

So I started one: https://discord.gg/uh85ZRNcfk

Feel free to join us if you're a Discord user.

I intend to try get bridged with the gitter and irc channels eventually.

Kinda unilaterally elevated this Discord server to "official": https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Help#Discord There's some sort of elevated power "FreeCAD Team" I'm on which other project admins/devs can get added to if desired for some moderator-power resiliency in the channel.

OK to revert if this is disagreeable.

If not... need to include Discord icon and link on homepage? /r/FreeCAD? Anywhere else?

Also planning on bridging the "General" channel of FreeCAD Discord server to IRC/Gitter at some point in the future. If it ends up being too annoying having all those chat services smushed together like that I can disable it or revisit the discussion.

Strange enough the discord link is pointing to BRL-CAD, at least with the web browser interface.

I have to select on the left freecad.

Is this normal?

I just clicked the invite link in the very first post and it properly redirected me to the FreeCAD Discord. Did you click on the second link? That one goes to the Elmer discord server that has channels for both brl-cad and freecad.

Probably I have clicked the wrong link.

The post was intended as a "user report" and not a "critics".

I think that an asynchronous communication model (like mail or a forum) is much better suited for the development of a complex system than real-time communication mechanisms (like Discord or Chat). For a simple reason: I, personally, and many people I know, work in batches, in bursts of contribution. So I live a "normal" life without any FreeCAD contribution (may-be some browsing of FreeCAD forum) and when enough stuff has accumulated/I have some time, I work on all the subjects, clean up my stack, and forget about it for some time again.

Therefore, I think that, while Discord is visually pleasing, it's ultimately DOA for FreeCAD.
