Feature request: 2D sketch in 3D view

Post by freedman »

This is small part of another discussion. Here is link but it's not really important to this post.
https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=40129

I will repost a couple pics and recap the details. Currently in Part Design there is an option in Preferences-Sketcher-"Restore camera position after editing", I want to add another option to the list "Maintain camera position while editing". With these two options set correctly, when entering Sketcher the current view will not be set to sketch-normal, instead the current view will stay the same as it was in Part design. Sketcher has no problem with this in terms of sketching and in many cases sketching in the 3D view can be very effective. My goal is to move back and forth between Part design and sketcher in a almost seemless enviornment.

Using a 2D sketch 3D view; The constraints are amazingly effective in a 3D view, they hold the solid to certain dimensions and you are allowed to adjust only the unconstrained portions, just like modifying a solid in 3D but now it's done to the sketch.

I have attached a simple example. If you want to try it open the revolution sketch in Body001, then set sketcher to isometric view. The constraints hold the valve body to certain dimensions. With auto-update set to On the visuals are outstanding, to me this is the power of CAD, this is real-time solid editing in Sketcher. You can modify some proportions of the valve body by dragging a sketch line around. You can use alt+left hold to adjust the 3D view in sketcher.

I think it's also necessary to to switch between sketch-normal and the 3D view which can be done with view toolbar. The isometric icon could hopefully be redefined in sketcher to set the stored 3D view instead of isometric.

I second that. If only to make the whole CAD experience more fluid.

BTW: You don't need to upload files or images twice, you can link them instead.

This is not universal. Gesture navigation works this way, CAD navigation doesn't.

Other than that I would add your "About FreeCAD" info and make a feature request on Mantis.

I will get it on Mantis, thanks.

@chrisb, searching for link and picture isn't the answer on a CAD forum :) . How do I link a pic. Thanks.

Sorry, sometimes I forget what is known and what is not.

To link a file:
- Right click on the existing link. The browser provides something like "copy link address", which you do. I copied the address from your file above.
- in the post where you want to have the image, use the link tag. You have to provide the displayed name, which well may be the same as the source

Code: Select all

[url=https://forum.freecadweb.org/download/file.php?id=94546]valve_sk.FCStd[/url]
this will yield:
valve_sk.FCStd

To link an image:
- Right click on the existing image. The browser provides something like "copy graphics address", which you do. I copied the address from above.
- in the post where you want to have the image, use the image tag:

Code: Select all

[img]https://forum.freecadweb.org/download/file.php?id=94547[/img]
this will yield:

I don't see a copy graphics in Firefox, all I see is copy link and that looks like this:

Code: Select all

[img]https://forum.freecadweb.org/download/file.php?id=94546[/img]
It's different at the end, no file name. I will keep working on this, I see where your headed.

This explains some of the posts I have seen with intermixed image, text, image.
Thanks.

I'm sure you posted it somewhere, but I don't remember: what OS do you you use? I'm sure there are other users with the same system and locale who may help.

On my system clicking right on an image it is the third menu item from the top.

You seem to have copied the link to the FCStd file, and not to the image.

On Windows the menu for Firefox 66.0.5 looks like this. The item you have to select for creating an image link is "Copy Image Location".
