v19 help files

Post by Cryptonym »

I downloaded and installed the v19_pre Win Conda release on my Win10(2004) laptop. I'm just learning it. The help system seems to be missing. I found a link (https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Installing_Helpfile) to install the help files to the "doc" subfolder, but now it complains of a missing "assistant" file in bin. Neither Help->help or Help->What's this work.

How to I get the help system to work?

Thanks

the missing assistant is the qt-assistant which you need to install separately.
on linux you will find it in any sw manager or through the terminal, on windows I guess there is a link somewhere for a download.

assistant.exe should be included in the bundle and it isn't. I'll fix this for the next Win Conda builds.

Hi to all,
I have exactly the same problem, but in Linux Ubuntu18.04 with FreeCAD 0.19.2 , with some difference: the difference I found is that I can start FreeCAD HelpFile using assistant in a terminal, but independently by FreeCAD window.
When I try to launch Help in FreeCAD, it seems to do something, but after some second of "crunching" nothing appears.

Thank you

Hello,
Where are you getting FreeCAD from; Ubuntu software repository, PPA, AppImage...?
Can you post your "About FreeCAD" info, please.

Hello, sgrogan
here you will find infos requested:

1) Actually I'm using FreeCAD from Ubuntu-Mate "Software" application (I think is is "gnome-software"); you can look at picture FreeCAD_2021-08-11 11-29-30.

Hello, sgrogan
I tested an older revision (0.19 beta) and it works well!

Here infos:
OS: Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS (MATE/mate)
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.19.23756 (Git) AppImage
Build type: Release
Branch: master
Hash: 9c6e9184930a52b165a0b7274e3a45d1006bfe67
Python version: 3.8.6
Qt version: 5.12.5
Coin version: 4.0.0
OCC version: 7.4.0
Locale: Italian/Italy (it_IT)

I will find the latest appimage release and I will test it: I hope it will work.
Thank you very much

Hello,
I did some other test, about HelpFile using Qt-Assistant, where versions are listed by filename of corresponding AppImage release:

nov 22 2020 FreeCAD_0.19-23074-Linux-Conda_glibc2.12-x86_64.AppImage* --> Assistant works fine
gen 29 2021 FreeCAD_0.19-23756-Linux-Conda_glibc2.12-x86_64.AppImage* --> Assistant works fine
ago 11 12:11 FreeCAD_0.19-24291-Linux-Conda_glibc2.12-x86_64.AppImage* --> Assistant doesn't work at all

The last one is - I think - the latest stable.
I also noted a difference between the three releases: reading "About FreeCAD" infos you can fined that "branch" is different
