To ensure selection you need to toggle the other sketch that is visible (Sketch001.)

Alright, by setting line width and point diameter to an absurd 20 and 50 pt, respectively, I found that turning off the geometry does matter, but adjusting point/vertex size does not. Even with a massive honkin' square under my mouse, I still need to get the exact right pixel in order to select the point. That's not possible at all with geometry in the way. Once it's selected, the tool works as intended.

Did you also set the pick radius (see my post above) to a massive honkin' value?
