Rounded shape? Suggestions.

Post by Steve76063 »

I'm trying to recreate a car part that has a rounded-raised center section my initial idea doesn't seem to work :(

My thought was to make an outline, and then create a 'rounded' sketch and sweep it around the outline, but I've run into LOTS of issues with that! First of all, if I select the sketch (called Outline Profile in my project), and click on Additive Pipe, I immediately get this error:
Error Message

If I ignore the message and tell it to sweep around the outline, I get strange shapes like this:
Odd shape

so I'm obviously doing something wrong!
Can someone look at my original part and tell me how they'd start designing it? Thanks for your help.

This sweep path creates self intersections and thus creates an invalid solid. I would create the inner part with a loft with multiple sections. To get it smooth you may have to make the sections wider then the part finally should be. Cut the excess with a sketch based pocket. Finally do the outer "ring" with a sweep.

Awesome everyone...I'll look through these and decide which way I want to go (mostly, which one I understand :D I'm still learning!).
