Post by bonny »

Hello...

Near every day the freecad is updated. mainly documentation. But when I hit F1 in freecad noting happend. even in help menu there is no manual available (just web only)
So is there some manual for offline or not and if not what is updated near every day?

Slavko.

Hi!
This is probably because you are using development snapshot. AFAIK, getting docs off the wiki and putting them into FreeCAD involves substantial work. It is not automated. If you use a released version, help should work there...

Hello...

I was tried to unistall freecad, disabled ppa, and instal the regular one. It was 0.14 from jan. 01. 2014 build 2935. The manual doesn't work there either. So I just reenable ppa and upgrade back to 0.16 version 4856/GIT. Of course manual doesn't work ...

I don't know then. For me, pressing F1 invokes the help in:
OS: Windows 8.1

This has nothing to do at all.

When compiling FreeCAD, do you think the system gets the doc directly from the wiki? Of course not. It takes it from the source code.

The Daily Builds packages do the same. They only build exactly the same documentation every time a new build is done.

Slavko, have you first installed the freecad-doc package? It is separate from the freecad package. It is only a suggested package, which means the freecad package does not depends on it. You have to install it manually.

I have tested it on the Daily Builds PPA package, and I confirm that it won't open in FreeCAD. Neither F1 nor Help --> Help work. This is a bug that the FreeCAD developers will have to fix.

In the meanwhile, there is a workaround I found here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7078&start=10#p63515

Translated for Ubuntu users:
  1. Open Qt Assistant, either from the Unity menu, or from the terminal:

    Code: Select all

    assistant
  2. Go to Edit --> Preferences
  3. Switch to the "Documentation" tab
  4. Click on the "Add..." button
  5. Click on the "Filesystem" bookmark, and navigate to /usr/share/doc/freecad-doc/freecad.qch
  6. Click OK, close the window
  7. In the "Summary" left pane, there will now be "FreeCAD Documentation" listed.
You will have to open the Qt Assistant separately from FreeCAD to access the documentation.

This is probably something to do with Unity, as there does not seem to be a problem with KDE, Help works just as expected with FreeCAD on the K Desktop.

I'll include the disclaimer that I am compiling locally from source. :geek:

It has absolutely no relation to Unity. I can open the Help with no trouble on FreeCAD compiled from recent source or from the releases/FreeCAD-0-14 or releases/FreeCAD-0-15 branches.

It would be useful to get a Kubuntu user to actually test the Daily Builds PPA and report if the same problem exists.

Thanks sgrogan.

The debian package installs the Qt Assistant file in /usr/share/doc/freecad-doc/freecad.qch. The thing to check is, does FreeCAD knows to look there for the Help file.

From Report View

Code: Select all

Help file at /usr/lib/freecad/doc/freecad.qhc
And the doc folder does not exist in this location

Edit: I also don't have a /usr/share/doc/freecad-doc folder
