Farnsworth house modelling

Post by RudderDuck »

This is the first step of modelling Farnsworth house, designed by Mies van der Rohe, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farnsworth_House.

My main objective is to gain experience in modelling a building with FreeCAD. My approach is to create the different components as parts and then make linked copies which are put together to create the building. Where possible I'm using arrays. I'm using groups to separate the different parts of the building:

Site / Structure / Skin / Services / Space planning / Stuff.

The Structure is done (apart from those bits that are used to connect parts which I'll probably add later). I added the floor slabs at this early stage because Mies van der Rohe carefully detailed his work. The grid of the slabs is almost driving the rest of the building. Getting this right is the basis for adding the remaining parts of the building.

I have some detailed drawings that I use for this project. Imperial measurements are converted to metric, also using metric profiles for the different beams/girders/columns/etc. I try to stay as close as possible to the original.

I will post my progress after the Skin is finished. The Services may be skipped to finish with the Space planning. If all goes well I should then have gathered valuable experience and will know how far I can push FreeCAD (and myself).

Feedback is welcome. I'm not really using the Arch workbench but if people see obvious mistakes then I can still correct them. The current FreeCAD file is also added for you to take a look at. At the moment I'm using the placement x/y/z info for fine tuning the placement. Sometimes this is in meters instead of millimeter which makes adjusting problematic. Not sure how to make it always show mm.
