Car hood opening lever.

The original part has a weak point, and the used part costs 20 -25 euros ... and it will crack again. The solution is to make a new part. The production cost 22 euros.

Of course, soon as I take a foto of a broken part. Point is, the part is weakest where momentum is biggest.

The part is designed to be locked on "click". It is cleverly thought out, but in practice it is a bad solution. The parts intended for bending are the weakest and crack. The photos showed weak points and places of fracture. I tried to fix the part with plastic L profiles 10x10x0.5, I glued them with epoxy resin. But the manufacturer did not give accurate information because the resin melted and it had to withstand temperatures up to 180 degrees Celsius. I also tried with metal reinforcements, but that didn't help either, the sheet metal also got cracks.

So I decided to oversize and print the part. For now, it works without problems.

Made and adaptor for an enclosure and machined it out of plastic.

Unfortunately haven't used Path to post the program. But hope someday I will have time to learn it. :D and eliminate the proprietary software in the workflow.

I'm just curious.
Soooo... this is the part you usually have to press by hand to open the hood, right? If it brakes again the hood will not open during driving, or :?

22 euros is quite expensive for such a part, is shipping included?... I guess you did choose Nylon and SLS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_laser_sintering) from an online service provider?

No this is the part that you have to press once you have opened the hood with the innner lever or similar thing.

It is a hook that block the opening so if the hood is not correctly closed (or opened during the car run) hood is not projected onto the windshield with some catastrophic consequences.

Prices are rather high, as the price is not related to the "production cost" of the part, it has to incorporate also the logistic behind to have a supply at original part dealer, so for a little bit of plastic you could have a lot of "fixed cost" charged on the price because:

- each part must have:
- a position in spare part catalogue
- a price in the spare part price list
- and so on

- many parts are simply "stored" someplace to be "ready to deliver" and also this "storage room" as a cost.

Usually there are some "central storage" usually maybe base upon Nation, or State or even more "granular" depending on the "importance of the part" int term of "vehicle stop time".

You have a different "tolerance" in term of "time to supply" based on a simple question "this part will stop the vehicle at the shop".

Plus part that break frequently are "more available" than part that "nearly never break".

But there are many considerations as each maker has a different policy.

Hood will never open when you drive because of this part, so it must be pressed by hand to open the hood. I drove the car without original part for few months, the period when I was seeking original replacement part. Without this part you cant open the hood without long screwdriver...
When you pull the lever in the car, the hood is a bit open. Then you lift a hood, press the lever (my part) and then you can open the hood. Part is active only when you push it.

Yes, SLS and polyamide 12 (Nylon 12), no shipping. When you have a few 3D printing companies, the prices are high. But the used part or new with the same failure is way too expensive, so printing it is the best solution for me. :)
