Kite Aerial Photography Rig

Post by yvonh »

Hi,
My first design in FreeCAD was back in 2017. This is a kite aerial photography rig to hold and control my camera. As I was just starting in 3D design, this project was partially designed in FreeCAD. I also used Altium, an electronic CAD software with limited 3D drawing tools.

Now, all my designs are done in FreeCAD. I am impressed what I can do with this tool. Bravo to all the developpers. I can appreciate the efforts put into this.

Thanks for sharing. I like it if things get out of the computer into the real life.

Anything you can tell about the modeling, such as workbenches used, difficulties you mastered, ...?
A Sketcher Lecture with in-depth information is available in English, auf Deutsch, en français, en español.

Back then, I was totally new to 3D drawings. I was using the "Part" workbench and combining cubes, cylindars,... I learned a lot since and now I draw each part using "Part Design" & "Sketcher" and also using parameter defined in a "Spreadsheet". This makes it a lot easier to do some adjustments in dimensions as the design progresses.

In Canada, the maximum altitude is limited to 500ft (152m). To fly higher, special permissions are required.

The highest altitude by a single kite record is 4879.54m (16009ft), by Robert Moore from Australia in 2014. I was following him on www.kitebuilder.com each year as he was attempting to break the record previously owned by a Canadian from Ontario.
