Compsognathus

Post by fosselius »

I am teaching my 8 year old son some basic programming, mechanics and electronics, to make a "fun" project, we decided to build a 1:1 Compsognathus.
Progress is a bit slow as both my son and me must be "in the mood" at the same time. The main goal here is to teach my son some good life skills and iterative design. We have made a few designs on the head and have now restarted from the tail.
Hopefully, we will reach a level where we get it to gently wobble forwards with some big feets.

The tail is built from 3d printed segments and 3mm nylon trimmer wire.
The tail segments are glued in the center wire, while the other 3 wires slide though each segment. All 4 wires are glued to the end tip. With this setup we can actuate the tail in different direction while pulling/pushing on the 3 outer wires, causing them to bend the middle wire.
There are also additional holes to attach additional fishing lines to increase the control of the tail movements.

In the initial design, the head and tail will be passive, but i try to design it so control can be added in the future.
I have previously played around with nylon muscles and in the future i might try to retrofit some nylon muscles on the robot.
