Welcome to the internet, it happens :(

I did have an issue with a previous version that was completely free spinning, and it would randomly start unspooling. With this version I just snug up the collar to give it a bit of drag and it works fine.

I see there's barely enough room to use a bolt instead of a set screw, I didn't think about that, should've left more room. Are you able to get the spool nut over the bolt on the other side?
Yup, I don't have any M5x8 bolts to hand... and the ones I tend to use have a big head compared to screws. I can't get your spool nut over my M5x14 bolt (smallest I have to hand currently), so I've just dumped a bit of superglue down the thread to the steel bar. I'll see how if it stays on... it's quite tight fitting, so should be good at least for a few rolls, by which time I'll know if I wanna keep this setup or not.

It seems to work perfect for me. It's hard to tell quality improvements without some major benchmarking efforts... but I'm certainly noticing no degradation... and the filament unwinds so smoothly and slowly that it's not unraveling at all. To my mind, it seems an obvious choice for improvement... my rolls were previously twitching as the off-centre-spindle slack would be taken up. That's 100% gone now, so must be giving some improvement. I've only printed a PCB holder so far, but can't fault it (realised to take a pic after I'd started mounting, but you get the idea)...

So yeah, overall, pretty pleased with this upgrade... kudos to you for publishing it to the community, and continuing with the friction improvement :)

No problem, and thanks for sharing your build, looks good!

I got the set screws at ace hardware for about 10 cents a piece, if you have one of those or something similar near you. You can also get them on ebay for like $2.

I solved the problem of jerking the spool causing it to overshoot and unwind by feeding the filament through a section of PTFE tubing.

No bearings in my holder though:

Good idea. Mine's working fine now, but if I have anymore issues I might try that.

Did you design that in freecad?

And if so, I like to see the FreeCAD files on thingiverse, just to promote FreeCAD and get less "how do I convert a mesh into a solid" questions.

This has the filament guide and my current version which integrates a microswitch run-out sensor.
The filament holders were designed in OpenSCAD. They are better off staying there as they are fully parametric.
