ELT-MAORY with FreeCAD-Assembly4

well, it was time to see whether all that invested work into FreeCAD and Assembly4 was worth it, so I decided to give it a try to do some real work. Below you can see a screenshot of the current design of the MAORY project for the ELT. There was no design done here, only assembly of imported STEP parts. There are hundreds or thousands of parts, and the limit begins to be the power (or lack there-of) by laptop.

So far, FreeCAD+Assembly4 seem to be up to the task.

Zemax export. The opticians give me those files.

Wow...trully impressive. I love seeing real life work done with freecad. I think that some of this work should bee displayed on the main freecad webpage as a showcase of capabilities. Do the orientation of the mirrors influence the direction of the rays? What I really mean: can this assembly be used to simulate or determine the needed geometry/orientation of the mirrors in order to have a clear focus of the rays?

Incredible work... thumbs up.

:o
Wow, that is impressive!
We should add this to the 0.19 Release Page and also add it to the 0.19 Release video !

Yes, cool work.
Is it possible to get (free) step-files from the telescope itself?
Especially from the steel-structure?

I only have an old model from 2009, and I don't know if I can publish it, sorry. Also it's quite large : 120Mb

Wow, as someone who works on opto-mechanical design this is heaven!

What CAD system was used for the actual design of the ELT?

I don't know. And there might be more than one, because some parts are done by subcontractors.
